WSSP: First-Race-Podium for the new Yamaha R6

It was a dramatic World SSP race in Phillip Island. After the front row start from Federico Caricasulo and Lucas Mahias‘ second row start after Saturday’s qualifying session, the GRT Yamaha WorldSSP team celebrated a big success due to a First-race-podium after a photo finish.

Lucas Mahias fought all the way to second place on the all new Yamaha R6. He retained his runner-up-status, after clashing with race winner Roberto Rolfo (MV Agusta Team Factory Vamag) over the finish line. Mahias was later given a 1-second penalty for weaving over the line. He stayed on 2nd place.

Unfortunately another possible GRT-team podium with the second rider Federico Caricasulo didn’t come off, because off his crash in the last lap.

The first race of the 2017 SSP season was cut to 15 laps (originally 18 laps), as a precaution against excessive tyre wear. But then because of the red flag in the first run, the race was finally a 10 lap-race.

Lucas Mahias was never out of the top three places, while Federico Caricasulo, who saved a 3rd place in qualifying, stayed in contention for the win until the final lap. After a fight with Jules Cluzel, both riders (Cluzel and Caricasulo) crashed after a contact with each other.
